Knowledgebase: RBS Server
What are the hardware recommendations for the RBS Server?

The hardware required to run an RBS Server depends on a number of factors.

WHAT SOFTWARE WILL YOU RUN ON YOUR RBS SERVER?

RBS offers several software packages that you can install. The RBS Server software itself is very light and requires few resources – Any Windows operating system and 4GB RAM is sufficient to handle 25 to 50 customers backing up nightly between 5PM and 8AM. A Server operating system is better, but the RBackup Server is very lightweight and requires few resources.

If you want to run the Web Manager PlugIn or the E-Commerce PlugIn, you will need a Server operating system (RBS supports all Windows server platforms) with Internet Information Server (IIS) and 2 CALs, and minimum 8GB RAM.

HOW MANY CLIENTS DO YOU WANT TO SERVICE?

Large scale installations may require multiple RBS Servers for redundancy, load balancing and failover. You can also use multiple Internet connections. Most end users do their backups between 5PM and 7AM local time. So, you have 15 hours to do backups.

Your Server requires more RAM and CPU power for more simultaneous backup sessions. The chart below uses typical traffic patterns reported by service providers.

HOW MUCH DATA STORAGE WILL YOU NEED?

A recent Service Provider survey showed that the average business customer uses 30GB of storage. 15% of business customers use between 30 and 50GB.

Your data storage requirements are based on how much data your customers send to your Server, and how long you keep that data. RBackup keeps multiple copies of files, and you can determine how long it keeps them and how many copies it keeps.

Data stored on your RBS Server is compressed to an average of about half its native file size. So, a file of 100GB on your Client’s computer might consume only 50GB on your Server.

Any kind of data storage will work which can be seen by Windows as a mapped drive letter. Internal drives, NAS, SAN, shared network drives, etc.

DO YOU WANT MIRRORED SERVERS OR AUTOMATIC FAILOVER?

To mirror your RBS Server or provide failover you will need two times the hardware.

DO YOU NEED LOAD BALANCING?

Load balancing assumes you have two or more RBS Servers sharing the same storage array. It requires duplicate server hardware and shared network storage. RBS Servers have built in support for load balancing.

HARDWARE RECOMMENDATION CHART

The following chart contains our recommended minimums based on average resource usage for different numbers of business customers as reported by Service Providers in an annual survey. Your needs may vary depending on your particular setup. Please note that this chart shows USERS not LICENSES.
