Error() in VSS plugin backup during exchange DB level backup. Also applies for other related errors with VSS service.

Event ID 8229

A VSS writer has rejected an event with error 0x800423f3, The writer experienced a transient error. If the backup process is retried,
the error may not reoccur.

Changes that the writer made to the writer components while handling the event will not be available to the requester. Check the event log for related events from the application hosting the VSS writer.

Resolution:

1.) First run DOS Command>

vssadmin list writers

This command will list all the available writers and their status. Check the status of Microsoft Exchange writer.
You might get a status as "microsoft exchange writer state 7 failed"

2.) Restart Microsoft exchange information store. This should correct the status of Microsoft exchange writer.

3.) Now disable circular logging for both MS Exchange DB and public Folder DB.

4.) Run DOS command "net stop vss". This should stop the volume shadow copy service. Make sure the status shows as manual.

5.) Restart RBS client and start the backup now.
